We are a group of parents, family members and those in our community from the Niagara Region and beyond who have lost our loved ones to, or are coping with substance use disorder. We also have members who are working in the field, interested in the impact this is having on our country, or generally want to learn more about the issues substance users and their families face. Any parent of a substance user or even if a substance user themselves, please feel free to contact us if you have any questions.
We believe in advocacy. We believe in speaking out. We believe in science based treatments for severe opioid addiction but genuinely support those facing a different battle and choosing 12 step programs where appropriate. We strongly support Harm Reduction. (Harm reduction is a set of practical strategies and ideas aimed at reducing negative consequences associated with drug use. Harm Reduction is also a movement for social justice built on a belief in, and respect for, the rights of people who use drugs.) It is our number one mandate.
Our goal is to share our unique and individual hands-on lived experiences to those with the authority to make changes in our community for the better.
We speak at council meetings, participate in discussions and have members who are part of the team of the Niagara Regional Opioid Crisis panel, as well as giving interviews and participating in various ways, including advocacy and volunteer work.
We are not here to defend drug dealers, nor are we here to criticize them as we understand the vast majority are substance users themselves.
We accept this as a reality and believe change can only be made through innovative harm reduction initiatives, and ultimately decriminalization.
We are here to offer support and a place where questions can be explored.
